Cricket World Champions 2011

Hurray!

India won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. It’s an event that would bring wide smiles and the feeling of dream come true to Indians. Cricket, lets say, is a religion in India and the team has done remarkably well to win the highest accolade of the sport. This win is a contrast to 1983 WC win. Then we were under-dogs, no body would have put money on India. Whereas in 2011, India were the clear favs to win the cup. The expectations from the players was at a sky high especially after the dismal 2007 WC. I in no way intend to undermine the feat achieved by our 1983 team. I wonder if anything else can bring more joy to 1.2 billion Indian hearts…

“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Hindi version gives more goose bumps: “Itni Shiddat se maine tujhe paane ki koshish ki hai; ki har zarre ne mujhe tumse milane ki saajish ki hain”. That quote will be 100% true. Sachin, probably playing is last WC would easily give away all his records for the trophy. Falling into tears after the final blow by Dhoni just proves that. Yuvraj, you could see the focus and intensity on his face during QF against Aus. From the time he walked in, India never looked like losing its way in the big chase. Dhoni, has been just fantabulistic. A captain who never takes adulation to head and failures to heart! Promoting himself above in-form Yuvraj to combat 2 SL spinners was commendable. The guy just deserves a bow…All other players Gambhir, Kohli, Zaheer and entire squad would be v proud of their contributions. I was actually overwhelmed when all the young guns dedicated the WC to Sachin. It showed amazing character and some flavor of Indian culture. Its like when you get your first ever pay check, you dedicate it to your family!!

One man who deserves great send-off (sadly) is Gary Kirsten, preparing every player to play his best game. He took charge of Indian team after the forgettable tenure of Greg Chappell as coach and transformed a team of upcoming talents and massive experience into World Champions!!! A gift India will always be thankful for…
